Transportation and Logistics

Transport - intermodal, liquid and bulk

Description

The national and international goods transport sector is essential for the Dutch economy. Transport flows have risen sharply during the last ten years as a result of increasing globalization and even now after the economic crisis, further growth is expected in the coming years. A large number of logistics service providers operate in the complex logistics area involving the transport of packaged goods, bulk and liquids.

Nowadays, transport can be more efficiently organized thanks to investments in ports and rail networks and the use of multiple transport modes. Consideration should be given, however, to determining the most effective way to move freight between loading and unloading addresses. Should this be via consolidation and/or transhipment at the depots/terminals using intermodal transport? In order to gain insight into the entire process, advanced solutions are required in order to determine the optimal and sustainable route and the most efficient usage of resources. These solutions should take into account the ADR regulations (European agreement on the international carriage of dangerous goods by road), cleaning regulations and other restrictions, whilst also giving consideration, of course, to service and lead-time expectations.

The challenge – Optimal planning for every load

The following questions require careful consideration: what is the optimal intermodal route through Europe for each load, taking into account fares, departure times (rail, ferry etc.), surcharges and handling fees? Which loads are being transported by which truck (or subcontractor) and in which sequence, taking into account all restrictions, timeframes and company regulations? Which loads can be combined in order to ensure optimal utilization capacity? How can empty kilometers be minimized and how can return loads be optimally planned?

Dispatch

By taking into consideration up to date locations and information, how can you determine the best allocation of load to truck in order to minimize the number of ‘empty’ routes? Are alternative routes possible, once intermodal options, surcharges, railway timetables and transhipment facilities have been considered? What is the best way to adhere to all ADR regulations and other rules and regulations?

Continuous vehicle tracking

At any given moment in time, how can you access up to date information on the position of the trailers, trucks and drivers? Are the network and vehicle fleet flows balanced to ensure optimal utilization? What opportunities exist for the use of subcontractors?

Adherence to the ADR regulations

Are the regulations for both means of transport and drivers being adhered to? Is there a cleaning requirement and if so, where is the optimal location, taking into account the charges and conditions? What is the optimal compartment classification setup?

The Solution

A key feature of ORTEC’s solutions for transport and logistics service providers is that they are both easily implemented and designed with business processes in mind.

Our ORTEC Transport and Distribution (OTD) solution provides support for daily logistics planning, whilst also featuring real-time execution. OTD is an advanced planning and scheduling system (APS), which enables the required planning process to be flexibly modeled with robust user interfaces and optimization software. Furthermore, OTD consists of modules that integrate in real-time with TMS- and ERP systems and mobile devices. The system automatically takes into account ADR- and cleaning regulations and subcontractor charges.

ORTEC Transport and Distribution benefits

• Increased productivity, with a 20% efficiently increase in the use of resources;
• Growth possibilities without the need for extensive capital investments;
• Intermodal transport cost savings (out-of-pocket) as a result of using alternative routes;
• More extensive provision for adherence to all ADR regulations and other service requirements;
