Post and Express

Description The express business is a high competitive market, and strongly growing in the emerging markets. In the last ten years, large mergers and acquisitions in the European and North-American countries by the big four (UPS, FedEx, DHL and TNT) has led to opportunities for alignment and improvement. In particular the optimal design of the network and the optimal usage of the fleet and drivers are important questions for both large and smaller express companies. The postal market is focused on the implementation of the liberal market in 2011. Small but strongly growing new players have entered the industry, leading to improvement challenges for the entire market. In the post & express industry, there is an enormous focus on high service: next-day delivery, in most cases also at early (premium) hours.

Challenge Optimal planning of vehicles within a very limited time constraints: which orders should be done by truck and in which sequence, given the various restrictions, time windows and business rules. Are the rounds for deliveries and/or pickups optimal? Do we need a tactical daily territory for each truck / driver or is there room to apply dynamic overflow areas? How do we deal with known and ad-hoc pickups?

Real-time dispatching of collections. What is the best truck given their actual position and restrictions and business rules into account? What was the best truck based on depot profiles and templates. Are their alternatives, also respecting the service and vehicle-type constraints?

What is the linehaul network during the night, are their possible conflicts, also to use stand-bye trailers or by applying bypasses, in order to have a high utilisation and improved service level. Is there a clear load plan for loading the trucks and to optimize the warehouse operation? Do we use a trailer-pool or using swap-bodies? Do we need second drivers for a transport lane to obtain the required service within the given cut-off times?

What is the optimal number of hubs and depots with their depot-boundaries? How can we assign each zip-code area to the best depot while minimizing the total supply chain cost?
