Description Due to the upcoming economy in the far east, the intermodal transport, in particular the container logistics is growing rapidly. Strong harbour infrastructure facilities are a key element in the continental logistics to serve the hinterland. The shippers, harbour operators and trucking companies are facing important logistic challenges in optimizing the entire supply chain.

Challenge The trucking of containers. How to combine optimally export and import containers in one round? How to combine optimally two 20ft containers? But most important: the optimal dispatching of containers. The real-time decision for the next trip for an empty truck, taking real-time positions of driver, chassis and truck into account, as well as service and time window constraints and important ADR and other rules.

The routing of containers. How to optimally route a container through a continent, e.g., Europe, taking time-tables and tariffs of all involved relevant lanes, e.g., from ferry and train operator, into account. In the real-time dispatching, overviews, filters and insight should be possible for each lane. It should be possible to plan each separate lane independently, while still taking the relationships into account.

Where are my resources during the day, what is the actual position of the containers, trailers, trucks and drivers? Which containers are empty / full and do they have the right equipment? ORTEC Transport and Distribution (ORTEC TD or OTD) supports the daily planning of the resources, but also the real-time dispatching. For intermodal transport, e.g., of trailers or containers, it computes the optimal route, taking time tables and laddered tariffs into account. For container trucking it can combine import and export and combining 20-feet containers. The solution is real-time connected to Transport Management Systems, but also with mobile devices (truck computers, PDA's and/or mobile devices in warehouses).
