ORTEC launches a new phase in self-rostering
18 July 2011
More and more organizations are making the switch to the sweeping Swedish phenomenon of self-rostering. With this switch, employees will not only gain more responsibility and autonomy in relation to their shift roster, but in most cases they also will contribute to savings (3-5%). ORTEC clients are keen to implement self-rostering within their own organization, as was evidenced during a recent brainstorming session in which a number of customers expressed their opinion on the future development of self-rostering.
During this meeting ORTEC presented the first prototype of a self-rostering module, which - when connected to ORTEC's workforce scheduling solution ORTEC Harmony - will be accessible to every employee. The reactions to the prototype were very positive. All clients who were present indicated that they would purchase the system as soon as it is released to market. 'Sooner rather than later' was an often heard response, with the majority indicating that this method of scheduling would save them a great deal of time and effort.
For organizations using a self-rostering system, the objectives are clear. Reduced absenteeism, better quality and greater efficiency all contribute to cost reductions. But for the majority of organizations these reductions would not be the key driver to implement a self-rostering system. Their main goal would be to increase employee satisfaction through a better work-life balance and this in turn would make it easier to obtain employee commitment.
New phase
With this new module, ORTEC is starting a new phase in self-rostering. Gert-Jan Vos, Senior Business Consultant at ORTEC, explains: "It was already easy, but now it has become even easier. Especially for the employees who are now afforded more control over their own shift roster. At the same time they are given additional responsibility so that they can also consider what is in the best interest of the organization (and their colleagues)..."
Sneak preview
"How does the system work? We can certainly describe this, but maybe it is better to see it with your own eyes," invites Gert-Jan Vos. "During the Planning Day event (6 October 2011 - www.ortecplandag.nl) we may give a sneak preview to a select group of attendees. In addition, the ORTEC Harmony user group will also be participating in a brainstorming session. Given the enthusiasm among the brainstorming group, we will most likely begin work straight away - probably with these same customers - in order to further develop the system so that we can hopefully begin pilot implementations as early as 2012."
