How does ORTEC support savings, also for Green Initiatives?
ORTEC has been supporting companies in saving on resources from the start in 1981. Both human resources and transport related resources like fuel and trucks have been right in the focus when using Operational Research technologies, business processes know how and IT.
Savings related to Vehicle Routing and Load Building
Based on a steady growth of 20% straight from the start until today, the yearly savings by more than 1,000 ORTEC customers, using more than 150,000 heavy trucks for LTL and FTL transport, are listed below.

As ORTEC has also been involved in strategic and tactical planning (where should depots be, what should be the routes for this month) and pallet and load building, savings on transportation costs can be on average more than 20 % instead of 4% related to only the daily routing and scheduling.
An example of a typical situation:
- 2-6 % mileage savings because of optimization of depot locations (strategic and tactical planning)
- 5-10 % savings because of loading optimization (cartons, pallets and vehicle spaces)
- 2-4% on routing (mileage driven)
- 5-10% saved on time/people needed for the planning
- 2-4% saved on administration (because of better online communication)
- 1-2% savings on truck drivers (working hours).
So how much is 2.3 billion kg or 5.3 billion lbs CO2?
The total CO2 emission worldwide in 2004 was 27,245 billion kg. Compared to that yearly amount, 400 million kg / 880 billion lbs CO2 savings a year by ORTEC customers, is only 0,0015%.
It's better to visualize the yearly CO2 emission savings with the CO2 emission for a group of people. As the CO2 emission per person is different for each country, the yearly amount of 2,3 billion kg/ 5,2 billion lbs is equal to the total yearly CO2 emission for the following number of people:
- In USA 134,167 people
- In Germany 213,953 people
- In UK 215,503 people
- In Belgium 232,323 people
- In The Netherlands 259,155 people
- In France 277,480 people
- In China 551,890 people
- In Togo 5,974,026 people
When including the other ORTEC saving areas, the savings will be about 2.5 times as high.
