Challenges:
The main challenge for hospitals for now and in the future is to be able to provide the best possible quality of care with fewer resources. In short: to do more with less.
In order to achieve this, hospital processes need to be optimized and resources (people, rooms, machines) need to be used as efficiently as possible. This is particularly important for hospital personnel, as they are the most valuable and costly resource. This resource makes up about 70% of the total cost of a hospital.
Hospital employees should be scheduled as efficiently as possible and allocated to the tasks for which they were employed, namely treating patients. This will ensure that hospital staff is more content and productive at work, thereby increasing Employee Satisfaction.
Within the hospital sector, doctors and nurses spend a great deal of time on administrative activities, which means there is less time for patient care. This trend is not satisfactory since on average, they now spend 30-50% of their time on administrative duties. And 25% of hospitals’ expenditure is on administrative work. (Michael E. Porter)
