The core activities of Erasmus MC are patient care, education and research. At the hospital, patient care is the core activity; the core activities at the medical faculty are education and research. Every medical department has an educational purpose and also conducts scientific research. Erasmus MC's research covers the entire spectrum from fundamental non-clinical research to patient related research.
Our patient care comprises the entire specter of medicine and consists of leading referral care, leading clinical care and general specialist care.
Part of the mission of Erasmus MC is 'the development of high-quality knowledge'. The scientific research needed to accomplish this is patient related on the one hand and fundamental on the other. The hospital is the "training ground" for the medical faculties. About half the medical students do their residency in the hospital. About 1500 students are training to become physicians; 500 students are studying for a Master's degree in Health Policy and Management (HPM).
Erasmus MC enjoys a strong research reputation. It is one of the top Dutch research institutions and participates in national research schools. Erasmus MC cooperates with many healthcare centers, both at home and abroad. Research at the medical faculty is centered on the fields of Genetics, Endocrinology and Human reproduction, Immunology and Hematology, Oncology, Cardiovascular disease, Neuroscience and Health Sciences.
